Why Warm Up?

Your body is a very economical machine.  It gives the least possible effort to stay alive so imagine how rude you are when you suddenly ask it to exert into a full on sprint.  The body says “no way” and gets all flustered.  Muscle start working against each other and next you have torn or detached something of importance. Full stop.

So gently coach your body into activity.  A jog around the track will start the oxygen (fuel) flowing into the muscles and sinovial fluid (lubrication) flows into your joints.  Start moving your joints through a greater range of movement with some dynamic stretches or drills.  The drills will vary according to your sporting needs and can be either flexibility or skill centered, depending on your day’s program.

I will discuss drills and their importance to skill learning in a later blog.

Obviously the warm up, although a bit boring, is necessary for preventing injuries and obtaining a high skill level.

How then, in an emergency, can we get away with violent movement without suffering injury?  It all comes down to arousal and adrenalin.  Not a guarantee of being injury free, so don’t give yourself a fright and expect to get out of the warm up.

Another season almost gone and time to review.

There is not a lot of ‘blogging’ going on while I am immersed in training and coaching so it’s good to review

my blogs over the past three or so years.

Yes, there is some good and pertinent stuff from back then and I haven’t much to change except a little older and wiser.

I thought it might be a good thing to put out a seven article blurb on what ‘sport’ means to me both from a coach’s perspective and an athlete.

I continue to learn from others and hope to give some back.  Not all will agree with my findings but I stand by my ‘track record’ at State, National & International levels.

A Girl and Her Cramps.


Melanie told the Practitioners of a time at Netball with Alicia…”when a woman came right up to me with anguish on her face, she said, “Do you have any aspirin or ibuprufen?  My daughter has such bad cramps  that she can’t walk.  they just came on suddenly.”  I smiled to myself that she was guided in my direction, and I told her  that I didn’t have any aspirin or ibuprofen, but I had something else we could use: I could tap her with my fingers.

She was ready to try anything, so I went to her 13yr old daughter and began to tap.  Within one round of tapping (less than 30seconds) the cramps had more than half disappeared.  Within the next 30seconds, the cramps went away completely.  Her parents’ faces showed total astonishment.  I was thrilled to have a replacement first aid kit in my fingertips”

[Always ask if it’s ok to tap on anyone else.  It’s good when you don’t have time to teach them the points]

Power Starts – Breathing

Duhhh!!  All starts are power starts and ,yes, we have to breath.  So what?

A two thirds breath intake locked in on the ‘set’ command will ensure a rigid mid section, or core, to prevent loss of power transfer in the chain from arms to feet.  In other words the hips will stay parallel (horizontal) and not rotate.

Forcing the breath out between the teeth or with a hissing sound will hold the abdomen under tension through the acceleration phase.

But how long can you hold it?  That will depend on your level of aerobic fitness.  You may not need to breathe during a 100m sprint, but if you do, try breaking your breaths in to ‘phases’ or zones.

If you expel air rapidly during your start suck in another breath quickly to hold the tension.  Over 40m you may need to do this two or three times.  Up to the individual.

Once through the acceleration stage use short pants of air while maintaining tight abdominals to keep the pelvis rotated forward.

In martial arts terms this is called ‘breathing behind the shield’.

Stress and Heat on Performance

David was finding a common interest with parents who were also friends of the EFT Practitioner. Because he was a Doctor one mother confided:
We first used EFT with Adam (my son) when he was 8 during summer baseball. He often had a stomachache and general malaise before games but desperately wanted to play. During the games he often got overheated and nauseous. Once he threw up. We had attributed the nausea to his heat sensitivity but the more it happened, the more it looked like anxiety. We began to use EFT before games towards the end of the season, which greatly reduced the stomachache and nausea. The heat sensitivity seems to run in my family.
